When I “registered” C A Asterisk in 1989, by publishing a classified ad notification in the News Gazette (Champaign, IL), I recognized that some day I would want a website. However, in the 90’s there was a folk-wisdom that if you searched on a domain name, you were exposing your interest, and it would be entirely likely that someone would buy the name that you (re)searched, and then only sell it to you for a profit. I chose to not buy (or research) “caasterisk.com” until such time as I was ready to use it.
In the interval, Computer Associates (CA.com) has taken on a trademark identity that I would loath to infringe. Hence, “ca*”, aside from being problematic as a URL, has become lost to me.
However, in working on a contemporary project, I came to realize that
- a) caasterisk.com was still available, and
- b) if I were to lose caasterisk, now, I would be exceptionally grumpy
As of this date, caasterisk.com is “live” (i.e. it is no longer a <name>.wordpress.com site), even if my services are limited to friends and family.
But now, I am not at risk for being grumpy 😊
